Tonight-tobyMac

Posted by root On March - 12 - 2010

If Christian rock were like actual rock, TobyMac would be Chris Daughtry. A former member of celebrated trio DC Talk and now a solo star in his own right, he’s one of the few Christian rock artists a secularist might have actually heard of.

“Tonight,” TobyMac’s awkward, endearing new disc, wants to be everything to everyone: It’s a jumble of Auto-Tuned faux alt-rock (“Tonight”), kiddie rap (“Loud N Clear,” which features an appearance from half-pint MC/TobyMac offspring TruDog ’10), choppy funk rock (“Changed Forever”) and even reggae (“Break Open the Sky”).

Christian rock used to be justifiably notorious for its insularity and cheesiness, but after the crossover success of bands like Evanescence and Switchfoot, audiences are savvier than they used to be. They probably realize by  now that TobyMac makes for the world’s least convincing hipster, and that tracks like the Black Eyed Peas-evoking “Funky Jesus Music,” with its basketball metaphors and baffling “Jesus blazer” references, just make things worse.

TobyMac is a gifted melodicist – there may be no contemporary Christian rocker better at writing hooks – but an inconsistent stylist. “Tonight” is less an album than a collection of clashing genres that adults think “the kids” are into. The less-adorned tracks (like the hook-a-minute “Get Back Up”) can be, well, heavenly; the gimmicky ones, like the funk-ish “ShowStopper,” on which TobyMac unconvincingly sing-raps (“You came to ride the highs of this junk / Baby, we came to guarantee the big krunk”) are wince-inducing.

Recommended tracks: “City on Our Knees,” “Get Back Up”

It is a testimony to the saving power of Christ and sheer determination that today, Paul â??Bossâ? Onyango, Anthony â??Tonyâ? Mburu and Kennedy â??Kentiâ? Kimani are not only changed, but changing lives as the prolific boy-group and multi-award winning, Men Of God (MOG). The story of this trio that brought you hits like Tempted , Zing Zing and Go Let Him Go is as heart-wrenching as it is uplifting. It is a story of determination to overcome the most amazing odds to make it in life.

Growing up in the Korogocho slums, their lives were filled with criminal activities common with youth in that neighborhood. Thrust early into petty theft, street life and eventually gang-related crimes, their lives were on a stereo-typical downward spiral. That was until Tumaini Church came along.
Their love for music started to shine forth in 2001, as parts of two different groups. Two years later, they joined together and after experimenting with several names – Trouble Finishers, The Blaze, The Zoo Boys â?? finally settled on MOG. In 2004, they did their first recording with Sakata Music, for the track Dunda Na Love. They followed this up with Christ Superstars produced by Homeboyz, before doing Tempted and Zing Zing at Ogopa and Sakata respectively.

Juliani

His ascent up the Gospel entertainment scene may have come rather quickly, but heâ??s been in the game for a minute, honing his mic skills and toning his spiritual muscle â?? all in readiness to serve Gospel fans a special lyrical feast.

Juliani admits to being a â??spiritual guyâ?? from his early years, having been raised in a strict Christian environment. Yet the message of Christ made no sense to him for many years, he was content to just drift through life, seeing where and how it would take him. He grew up as part of a large family, with one sister and five brothers. Born and bred in the sprawling Dandora suburbs, the spiritual home of many Kenyan hip-hop icons, including Kalamashaka and Ukoo Fulani, music effortlessly became a part of his existence. With his sleek lyrical flow and passionate delivery, he easily got absorbed into the group. Soon he started performing with them at many local gigs and clubs, especially at the renowned Florida 2000 night club and casino. In 2001 the group released the full-length album Kilio Cha Haki, and Julianiâ??s Fanya Tena was an attraction of it.

After attending Wangu Primary School, he moved on to the place where he would fall in love with the arts, Dandora Secondary School. There he started rapping after he met up with Wenyejiâ??s Robert who later introduced him to Ukoo Fulani.

In August of 2006, his chance meeting with another amazing talent initiated what might very well be a storied career in mainstream acceptance. During a school mission at Moi Forces Academy, he bumped into Astar, who was impressed enough with Julianiâ??s flow that he decided to introduce him to Kijiji Records. Astar had just completed recording his debut single Close Your Eyes; a track that was riding high on the local music charts. He made the unlikely gesture of inviting Juliani to feature on the remix to the said single â?? a touch of genius.

As far as solo material is concerned, Juliani teamed up with Gospo-Epicâ??s DJ riQ to release his very first artist mixtape, which was received fairly well on the streets. His singles have continued to capture the imagination of Gospel fans – the older Jesusnosis is still an unrivalled work of art, while his most recent jam, Mtaa Mentality has been a run-away hit, with a top-flight video to boot.

2009 saw Juliani become the first local act to get signed on a UK label. Gatwitch Records snapped him up, and soon after he released his critically acclaimed debut album, Mtaa Mentality, which features hit singles such as Biceps and Hela. The album also went on to garner two accolades at the 2009 Groove Awards – Best Hip-Hop Album (Mtaa Mentality), and Best Hip-Hop Single (Mtaa Mentality).

Eko Dydda

He is fresh, he is extraordinary and he is good, very good. Ladies and gentlemen, introducing one the newest acts in the local Gospel scene, Eko Dydda. An artiste, artist and poet, his is a world of art which he has embraced, nurtured and altered to bring a whole new meaning to the way itâ??s done.

Newbie Eko Dydda has captured the imagination of hip-hop lovers with his unique style.

Although he started tinkering with music while still in high school, it wasnâ??t until much later that he paid it any considerable attention. As one of the praise and worship leaders in church, he never thought he would become a rapper, only seeing himself singing as far as music was concerned. That was to change after he went to live with his older brother who was a Hip Hop head and budding producer.

Known for the hit collaboration with Holy Dave, Niko Na Reason, Eko is a grateful man – in fact, the song is a thanksgiving jam whose intention was to give  glory to God for His goodness. Born 23 years ago, he has seen and lived it all, growing in some of Eastlandâ??s biggest slums including Mathare, Kariobangi and Huruma. Raised in a family of three brothers and one sister, his ride to the top of the charts has been quite eventful.

Eko credits his turn to hip-hop to a somewhat intriguing story: a â??spiritualâ?? friend in his former school, Eastleigh High, kept bugging him to seek God as he insisted Eko had something more to his purpose than just singing. He once woke up in the middle of the night only to hear tunes that sounded like beats ringing in his head. He was quite frustrated for this is not what he wanted; he had hoped God would give him a crystal clear answer about his calling. In fact, he found himself bickering to God telling Him to give the beats to his aspiring producer brother. Nevertheless, he asked God to give him words and was surprised when they came out as rhyme.
